Job Title: General Manager – Merchandising (Discount Goods)

They are currently seeking an experienced General Manager – Merchandising (Discount Goods) to lead and grow their merchandising division focused on discount retail channels.
Position Summary:
The General Manager – Merchandising (Discount Goods) will be responsible for overseeing all merchandising activities related to discount retail clients within the apparel, hard goods, and soft goods categories. Reporting to the Regional Managing Director, this role plays a pivotal part in driving client satisfaction, profitability, and growth through strategic vendor management, cost optimization, and operational excellence.
This leader will act as the key liaison between the sourcing company, its suppliers, and major international discount retailers and mass merchants. The ideal candidate has deep experience in merchandising and sourcing for discount channels, understands fast-paced retail environments, and can drive results through cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
Merchandising Leadership
- Lead and manage a team of senior merchandisers and buyers.
- Develop and execute merchandising strategies tailored to international discount retail clients (e.g., In US, Europe and Australia.).
- Ensure alignment with client pricing targets, margins, and delivery timelines.
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients in the discount goods space.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external brand partners.
- Understand client business goals and provide tailored sourcing and merchandising solutions.
Product Development & Sourcing
- Collaborate with product development and supplier teams to ensure products meet client specifications, cost targets, and timelines.
- Identify and onboard new vendors/suppliers that align with discount channel needs.
- Drive innovation and value-engineering initiatives to optimize product cost and quality.
Financial & Commercial Oversight
- Monitor and report on financial performance of assigned accounts, including gross margin, cost savings, and profitability.
- Review costing structures and negotiate pricing with vendors to meet client targets.
- Support contract negotiations and commercial terms with suppliers and clients.
Operations & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to compliance standards (labor, safety, quality) across the supply chain.
- Work closely with QA/QC and logistics teams to ensure on-time delivery and high product quality.
- Implement systems and processes to improve efficiency and scalability.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Fashion Merchandising, Supply Chain, or related field; MBA preferred.
- Minimum 10–15 years of progressive experience in merchandising, sourcing, or buying roles within the consumer goods industry, with at least10 years in a leadership role .
- Strong background in discount retail merchandising , preferably with direct experience supporting clients globally (US, EU and AUS)
- In-depth knowledge of apparel, soft goods (home/textiles), and hard goods (general merchandise) product categories.
- Experience managing large-scale sourcing operations and multi-million-dollar P&Ls.
- Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing merchandising teams.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical judgment.
- Willingness to travel regionally and internationally as needed.
- Based in Hong Kong
- Excellent communication skills in English, Cantonese and Mandarin
Preferred Skills:
- Fluency in English required; Mandarin or other Asian languages a plus.
- Knowledge of compliance standards (e.g., BSCI, SMETA, ISO, CPSIA).
- Understanding of global trade regulations, tariffs, and import/export logistics.
